Summary

Summer is the perfect time to pack a picnic and head to the beach, park, or even just your backyard.

Summer summer summer! There’s a reason why songs have been written about everyone’s favorite season - people love outside enjoying the sun, going on a hike, or having the perfect picnic. A picnic can be as simple or fancy as one wants, but where do you start? Don’t sweat it too much, we created a simple guide to help you throw the best picnic this summer!

Sun Protection

Okay, first things first and really important: sun protection. Being in the sun is no joke and skin protection is a must.

Sunscreen: We want to keep our skin healthy, rejuvenated, and safe from the sun. One of our favorite sunscreens is the Supergoop Everyday Lotion, it has SPF 50 and is perfect for all skin types.
Hat:
Make a statement with a fun accessory and also protect your skin. Bucket hat, trucker hat, big straw hat - no hat is too big or too small for the job!
Umbrella/Canopy:
Want even more coverage from the sun? A canopy or umbrella will do the trick. They will give the coverage you need while making your picnic look straight out of a movie.

Picnic Perfect Meals/Snacks

Like any other event, the food is the most important part when planning a picnic. It not only has to be delicious, but also easy to pack up, travel, set up, and eat. Here are some of our favorite picks for the ideal picnic food:

Thistle Meals: Thistle’s salads and snacks come prepared and ready to eat at any time, so all you need to go is grab and go! Not only are they a healthy alternative, but such a delicious way to level up your picnic.
Fruits and Veggies:
It’s no secret that fruits and veggies make the perfect snack. In season picks are always the best, but some of our favorites are strawberries, bananas, grapes, and peaches. No matter which you choose they will always be a winner.
Nuts and Trail Mixes:
A staple in most cupboards, nuts are very easy to transport and always make a good afternoon snack.
Charcuterie Board:
Although they can be intimidating to make if you don’t know exactly where to start, don't let that stop you. These boards are the ultimate addition to any picnic - here’s some inspiration:

  • Veggies - cut up veggies before you pack them up.
  • Fruit - slice up your fruit before heading to the beach. And if you’re bringing apple slices, put some lemon juice on them so they don’t turn brown before you get to the beach
  • Crackers - we love Cult Crackers
  • Bread - try the gluten-free sourdough bread from Young Kobras
  • Jelly or jam - fruit chia jam is so easy to make with this recipe - use your favorite fruit
  • Spreads or dips - we love these easy and completely plant-based recipes Beetroot Hummus or Pub Cheese

Dessert: A sweet note to end your picnic!

Beverages

Here are some mouth-watering drinks to sip during your picnic:

Water: Not the most creative, but an absolute must! This summer heat is strong and getting the proper amount of fluids should always be on the top of your list. You can always level-up your water by adding citrus or berries to give it more depth and flavor.
Thistle’s Cold-Pressed Juices
: Thistle has a variety of cold-pressed juices perfect for the summer heat. They’re refreshing, tasty and good for your health. Made up of organic veggies and fruits, not only are you getting hydrated- you’re also nourishing your body. With nine flavors to choose from, there’s something for everyone. P.S. They make great summer cocktail mixers!
Premade Cocktails & Mocktails
: Premade cocktails are as delicious as they are practical, and the perfect addition to your picnic. The beauty of these cocktails is you can make them the day before in your favorite reusable bottle and toss them in the mix when you’re ready to go!  Here are some of our favorite cocktails:

Watermelon Berry Margarita Recipe - refreshing and oh-so tasty
Probiotic Mocktail
- make a splash with this sparkling, citrus-y mocktail
SunPop Alcohol Infused Frozen Cocktails
- these ice-lollies will have you feeling nostalgic and refreshed
Crafthouse Cocktails
: Canned and ready to throw into the cooler, these cocktails are a must have.

Good Reads

Looking for the perfect book to bring to the picnic? Here’s a list of the top picks we have on this year’s summer reading list:
"The Guncle" by Steven Rowley
: A gay uncle unexpectedly becomes the caretakers of his niece and nephew. Hilarious, fun, and touching.
“People We Meet on Vacation” by Emily Henry
: Two best friends on vacation waiting for love. A light and funny read.
"The Last Thing He Told Me: A Novel by Laura Dave
: A pick from Reese Witherspoon’s book club, this novel will have you biting your nails till the end!
"Crazy Rich Asians" by Kevin Kwan
: Will Rachel Chu and Nick Young’s love beat family traditions?

Quick Tips:

Pack the night before: To ease the stress, pack all the non-refrigerated items the night before to get them out of the way. This way you can focus solely on the last-minute preparations.
Scout your spot: Take a walk throughout the park during the time you would want to have your picnic. This way you know how busy it might be and whether you need to bring bigger items like a canopy or umbrella.
Small things: Don’t forget the small details like napkins, utensils, and plates. We recommend bringing wet napkins to make cleanups easier.
Blankets and pillows: Comfort is key so make sure to grab your fluffiest pillows and largest blankets. The bigger the blanket, the more room you have to spread out. Nipomo blankets are our favorites.
Blanket weights: A little wind might be all you need for chaos at your picnic so come prepared! Blanket weights ensure that your blanket and everything on it stays put. No flying away on our watch!

And remember: Always make sure to clean up after yourselves and leave your spot how you found it!
